The Five Core Controls

  • Secure Configuration: Ensure that computers and network devices are properly configured.
  • User Access Control: Ensure user accounts are assigned to authorised individuals only.
  • Malware Protection: Restrict execution of known malware and untrusted software.
  • Security Update Management: Ensure that devices and software are not vulnerable to known security issues for which fixes are available.

Do certificates have an expiry date?
All new certificates issued will have a 12-month expiry date and renewable after that.
My organisation is not based in the UK. Can I still obtain Cyber Essentials certification?
Yes, organisations overseas are able to get certificates.
How are Cyber Essentials assessments verified?
A board member from the organisation signs a declaration to confirm that the assessment answers are true. A qualified assessor then evaluates the responses.

In the event that you pass you receive a certificate.

If you fail, you will receive feedback so you know which areas need to be addressed should you either want to re-apply for Cyber Essentials certification or take the opportunity to improve your cyber security.
How quickly can I get certified to Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials assessment results back to organisations will be issued as quickly as possible. It usually takes 24 hours from the time you submit your assessment.
How long will I have to complete and submit my assessment?
You will have 6 months from date of application to complete and submit your assessment. After this time your account may be closed. You would have to apply and pay again if you wanted to be assessed.
